Things to do
There’s more to our small fishing town, situated on the edge of the wild North Yorkshire Moors, than meets the eye. Hidden in our Victorian cobbled streets and alleys, which climb from our picturesque harbour to the medieval Abbey, are stories of Captain Cook’s voyages, whaling fleets, St Hilda chasing snakes from our cliffs, and of course Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula. My team and I are waiting at Norman Guest House to offer you a warm welcome and help you to explore our entire town, and local area, has to offer.
Only a few minutes’ stroll to the Cliff you will find yourself at the famous Whale Bone Arch and Captain Cook Monument, which offers a vista across the harbour to the Old Light House, and Whitby’s East and West Piers. As you look to the East Cliff you will see Whitby Abbey and Saint Marys Church standing proud. You could also take a walk down the Khyber Pass to enjoy the three miles of beautiful sand separating Whitby and Sandsend.
Whitby is known for its superb Yorkshire produce and live entertainment, if you’d like to take in Whitby’s bustling town centre our famous swing bridge is only five minutes’ walk from our Guest House, where you will find jet workshops, independent shops, art galleries, fish and chips, fine restaurants, wine bars, and of course our fantastic old taverns.
Situated near the market place you can enjoy’ Tate Hill Sands’, which is home to Whitby Life Boat and Whitby’s Rowing Clubs, the sands here are where Dracula famously landed on British shores. You can often see our rowing teams practicing on summer evenings, and the Abbey Wharf is the perfect venue to enjoy a drink and take in our harbour views. Walk on and you will be able to smell Whitby’s Famous Kipper House leading you to climb the 199 steps to Saint Marys Church and the iconic Abbey.
Just two minutes to the left of Norman Guest House you will find Whitby Leisure Centre, which offers a full sized swimming pool, state of the art gym and many classes to enjoy. In the same direction, and only five minutes’ walk, lies the award winning Pannett Park with its winding paths and beautiful all season displays. The park houses Whitby Museum with Pannett Art Gallery and cafe, all of which are a hidden delight.
For those of you looking to explore further, Whitby has 20 miles of stunning National Park and coastline surrounding it. All of the local historical Dales villages are steeped in history, offer fine thoroughfare, and can be reached by bus, car or Whitby’s Steam Railway. Quaint fishing villages are scattered all along our local coastline areas, and are a sight to behold, and not to forget the miles of walks you can explore.
Our gothic town has a stay to suit all tastes, and Norman Guest House is the perfect location to explore, and create cherished memories with your loved ones, friends and families.
